Portchester Sailing Club is located in the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour. Founded in 1928, the club now boasts a large clubhouse, 200 moorings, and a spacious boat park for storing dinghies during the summer and smaller cruisers during the winter. The club operates for 12 months of the year with various activities both on and off the water.
DINGHY SAILING
Dinghy sailing takes place at the club between April and October. Racing is held on Wednesday and Friday evenings, and at the weekends. Recreational sailing can take place at all states of the tide. The junior section is particularly well supported with a large Topper fleet. The club has recently achieved Volvo RYA Champion Club status, which recognises the strength of the junior programme and quality of coaching.
CRUISING
Keeping your boat at Portchester Sailing Club is one of the cheapest ways of boat ownership on the South Coast. The club offers deep water and half tide moorings and availability is usually good. Naturally, the most sheltered and closest moorings are more popular and have a waiting list. Shoreside facilities include hard standing for cruisers between October and April, a derrick for stepping and unstepping masts, and a pontoon, which is accessible for around 2 hours either side of high water.
Cruisers from Portchester enjoy trips around the Solent, and further beyond. Some of our members have sailed to all corners of the globe.
Cruises in company are a good way to expand your horizons, and these are organised regularly. On the racing side, cruising sailors compete in the annual Interclub series, which combine a good social weekend with a bit of friendly racing. More competitive members also compete in other regattas such as Cowes Week, and the Round the Island Race.
TRAINING
The club holds RYA Training Centre status and offers courses for both
adults and children. A wide range of dinghy courses are offered, and also powerboat and first aid training. The club owns several craft for use by club members for both training and recreational purposes. We welcome volunteers who are able to help with instruction in any capacity.
ANGLING
The club has an Angling section which organises competitions throughout the year. With numerous trophies to be won, both on the shoreline, and from afloat. The Angling section has a dedicated area for storing and preparing equipment in the yard.
