What a night! The annual Dinner, Dance and Prizegiving was packed full of members and guests enjoying this celebration of our season. Nick Martin, Sailing Secretary annouced the winners with a hilarious speech, and our Commodore Kath Douglass gave away the trophies. Congratulations to this seasons club champions, Chris and Ingrid Davies in the dinghies, and Reg and Elva Sillence for the cruisers.

The prizegiving programme, containing full details of all the winners, is now available for you to view in the downloads section.

Thanks are due to the Social team for putting on such a fantastic event, yet again.

Eve Trojan as well as being a trophy winner, took a multitude of pictures at the event, and has put them on her website.

Folly Jolly and Ladies Race
Written by Andy Pidduck
22nd September 2008

The fine weather bought out 21 PSC boats for an excellent rally with around 60 members managing to eat in the Folly, some inside and some out on the veranda.

Before the meal a number of members gathered on Gallivant for drinks while latecomers moored up. An opportunity to exchange rusty cans of lager for Pimms or wine was taken up by the crew of Mogil Maid with the honour returned later that evening.

Members boats attending included, Scramasax, Lulworth, Shining Light, Tania, Sealia, True Blew, Serendipity, Maggie May, Tsarina, Seraph, Farouche, Mischief, Suzette, Walkabout, Sitting Pretty, Gallivant, Gilly VI, Allos Star & Mogil Maid. Temeraire and Footloose stayed in Island Harbour but joined in for the meal and dancing after. The Folly was particularly busy and dancing space on the tables was at a premium for most of the evening especially to see the pub manager, Andy Greenwood perform on his drum set supporting regular musician Danny Bianco.

Several boats from Hardway SC moored on the South Pontoon and joined in with the Ladies Race on the Sunday at which 10 PSC and 4 Hardway SC lady helms entered. Again, the weather held fine so once past the start the lady helms gave a fine demonstration of their helming abilities.
As so often this year, Hardway prevailed overall with Lotte on Kerry Jeanne and Linda on Tania was placed as the first PSC but in second place overall. results are now posted.

Thanks to all that turned out for the last event during my period of Cruiser Captain – Please don’t forget to come and vote for my successor at the Cruiser AGM on October 9th.

Cruiser Evening Series
Written by Andy Pidduck
27th August 2008

The Cruiser evening series is hotting up with several boats in with a good chance of winning. It looks like the trophy will be secured by either Beltana, Footloose or True Blew, so it's everything to sail for!
Congratulations to Footloose on winning last night - results are now posted.

Please note that the next race will start at 18:30 (not at 19:00 as previously published) due to the light conditions.

I'll huff and I'll puff...
Written by Sailing Committee
6th July 2008
It was windy. And gusty. Yet lots of boats were still keen to race the Combined Harbour Regatta on Saturday. First off were the Cruisers who outnumbered the other fleets, and shot off up the harbour with a long course to Bedenham Pier. Harway SC's Pink Lime, managed to steal (yet another) victory followed by Blue Shark and Kerry J, both also from Hardway. First PSC boat was Beltana in fourth by the smallest of margins from Scramasax (fifth), leaving Steve Freeman wondering what he has to do to win a race!

The Victory's were small in numbers (9) but were vocal at the prizegiveing and social, and are as ever, always welcome. However we only ever know them as their sail numbers. Fortunately they seem to know each other by first names, so who are we to argue.

The dinghy fleet was hotly contested in the fitful breezes and short chop. Virtually everybody was in the drink at some stage before the start, but at the off, a healthy fleet started the racing with Chris Davies and Pedro Lego in a Laser 2000 winning finely from Paul Bayliss in his RS700. Race two saw Bayliss' halyard fail at the top mark, leaving the win to Chris and Pete again in a depleted fleet consisting of only them, Rob Eastwoods RS200, John Powell's RS 600 and a battling but worthy Joe Simmonds in his Topper. These all finished in those order for the CHR results.

The fleet plus hanger-oners were entertained by The Caws Bros. and Steve served BBQ for two and a half hours until the entire contents of the fridge and freezer were eaten.

Following such a superb day, it was a bit of an anticlimax for the final day of the SuperCup on Sunday to be cancelled due to even stronger and gustier winds.

This left Chris and Ingrid Davies (along with Pete Legg as stand in crew) as overall winners of the series.

That was the Windy Weekend that Was
Written by Paul Bayliss
1st July 2008
A windy few days to really blow the cobwebs of the summer away last weekend.

Five days of sailing translated as five days of exhileration and fun in a F5-6! Wednesday and Friday dinghy sailing was fast and furious, just as well it was on the top of the tide. Thurdays Cruiser Evening race was "fresh to frightening", but Reg and Elva Sillence in Beltana were unpeturbed and cleaned up in Beltana to take their second win of the series, and the overall series lead.

The weekend of Round the Islands was equally blowy. The big one was contested by nearly 1900 boats, amongst them 8 PSC competitors. Channel Ghost came out as victors after the PSC handicaps had been mercurially applied. Well sailed to all who finished - it was a tough one.

The other RTI race, the Portsea Cruise, demands slightly more benign conditions so was regretfully cancelled. Enthusiasts for the silghtly wacky, keep an eye our for next years event. Should be good fun.

Bumper Weekend
Written by Sailing Secretary (in Menorca - ha ha)
22nd June 2008
A fantastic weekend of club activity on 21/22nd June.

First we had the SuperCup. Paul and Mariea Oakey had the best of Saturday with two straight wins in a nice F3-4 although we could have done with some sun.

The Solstice Race was held out in the Solent, in slightly more wind, and was won emphatically by over 2 ½ minutes on corrected time by Reg and Elva Sillence.

Despite the terrible (and wrong) forecast, visiting club Marchwood YC arrived in numbers with 18 boats, and joined in the eating, drinking and dancing to Move It! on Saturday evening.

Sunday dawned sunny but very windy, and so the SuperCup was abandoned for the day. Many Marchwood members declined to battle back upwind in a F7, so stayed to enjoy even more drink (some looked the worse for wear from the previous evening truth be told!) and more of Steves fantastic catering.

Great to see the club so busy on both days.

Beaulieu Rally 2008
Written by Sue Sayle
19th June 2008

Beaulieu Rally – 14th and 15th June 2008

A total of 18 boats joined the rally to the new pontoons in the river at Bucklers Hard marina taking advantage of some fine weather. It was good to welcome not only a number of new members but also existing members joining club rallies for the first time, and several families – we hope to see them all again soon.

The evening barbecue was well provisioned and the one shower of rain did little to dampen the flow of beer or jolly camaraderie. Luckily, there were no other customers for the barbecues as Portchester, with about 45 people, did ‘take over’ the whole site.

Those boats that waited for the tide on Sunday also had some wind and a pleasant sail back home made for a perfect weekend.

Super, Super, SuperCup
Written by Paul Bayliss
9th June 2008
The weather gods smiled on Portchester for the first SuperCup weekend.

A fantastic couple of days racing on the top of the tide saw 34 competing boats over the two days. OK so the wind was a bit shifty, but that's the skill isnt' it? Chris and Ingrid Davies in their Laser 2000 won the weekend after a tough battle with Rob Eastwood and Adam Oakey in their RS200, and similar battles were fought throuout the fleet. First Junior was Joe Simmonds, who finished a creditable 6th overall, showing huge development since last years SuperCup events (he's now in the SE zone squad too - one to watch!).

Saturday nights social was a huge success with competitors and other members alike enjoying a fine BBQ (thanks Steve and Nessie) and entertained by the RIO band.

Missed out? Don't worry, theres more to come with another SuperCup weekend on 21/22 June and 5/6 July, with more great racing, Saturday night socials and great prizes.

Calling all Juniors
Written by Gilly Simmons
30th May 2008
Dear Club Members (particularly Juniors),

My son, Joe, was inspired by last year's Portchester Supercup, which he sailed in his Topper 'Taz'. From there he went on to compete in a very windy Chichester Fed. week and then applied to the RYA to join the RYA Zone Squad.

Portchester Sailing club was incredibly supportive and allowed us to borrow a club Topper to attend the selection events, and Joe was successful in getting selected to the squad.

He is now keener than ever, and on Wednesday evenings is racing in a Mirror (without the spinnaker) with his brother, Charlie, and on Friday evenings is racing his Topper.

What the boys would really love, is to have some other juniors/slow - slow handicappers out there racing with them. After the start line they don't see another boat (until they are lapped) as all the others are considerably faster over the water.

It is such a shame that club juniors are not taking advantage of the sheltered waters of the harbour - come down and join us on these lovely long summer evenings!

Gilly Simmons.

SuperCup 2008 weekends
Written by Paul Bayliss
29th May 2008
Make a note in your diary now. The SuperCup weekends are approaching fast being on 7/8th June, 21/22nd June and 5/6th July.

The SuperCup weekends were created to give top quality racing, on harbour courses (committee boat start) on the top of the tide off Portchester Castle.

The series comprises three weekends, each day having two back-to-back races of around an hour each. Each weekend will have a separate prize giving and in addition, each day will have spot prizes. There will be a social event on each Saturday night, with BBQ and live entertainment.

Last year we had over 50 entrants to the series and nearly half of these were junior sailors, however there was intense competition amongst our more senior participants too... there really is something for everybody.

There is no entry fee for the events, on-water or social, and the club bar will be open on all race days. The BBQ will be a pay-as-you-go affair with our excellent chef Steve providing all the eats.

We really hope that you will be encouraged to take part in this excellent event for a day, a weekend or the whole series.

See the Gallery for pictures from last years event and the downloads section for the poster containing further details.

Whitsun Bank Holiday Weekend
Written by Paul Bayliss

Hope it was good for all of our members and that you managed to get on the water. Saturday was pretty breezy but sunny and Sunday lacked wind...

Monday was just plain foul!!! You just might have been better off in the traffic jam...

Lymington Interclub 2008
Written by Sue Sayle
13th May 2008
LYMINGTON INTERCLUB – 10 & 11 May 2008

22 Portchester boats arrived in Lymington on Saturday 10 May to enjoy the fine weather and help Chris and Maggie Lawrence celebrate the christening of their new boat ‘Maggie May’. With the majority of the boats rafted up on Town Quay a very pleasant evening was spent eating fish and chips (from paper) on the Quay before adjourning to the Ship Inn for more beer.

Sunday arrived with plenty of sunshine and not a lot of wind, the short course was chosen for the race. A total of 26 boats from Portchester, Hardway and Fareham sailing clubs lined up to drift across the start, kindly organised by Lymington Yacht Club, and search for wind pockets and tidal streams in the western Solent. Luckily the wind, not from the preferred direction, kicked in after about an hour and provided much improved racing conditions across Cowes and down to Gilkicker. The race was on and turned out to be very enjoyable with a Hardway boat taking the honours overall and Sea Star finishing first for Portchester.

First Cruiser Evening Race
Written by Paul Bayliss
1st May 2008
The cruiser evening series got off to a lively start on 29th April. With torrential rain and 30 knots at 5pm, some thought all hope was lost, but on the stroke of half past six the skies cleared, the wind dropped leaving the door open for a lovely evening sail for the eight entered boats and crews.

Andy Pidduck on the Committee boat laid a port biased start line which Steve Freeman on Scramasax nailed to perfection to lead at Basket. The roaring Soling of Ian McInnes quickly assumed the lead, never to be seen again, but he had a daunting handicap to defend. The fleet had a long beat down the creek in slack water, before bearing off for a reach to Pile 98, a fetch to Admiralty 3, before heading home, mostly under spinnakers (if declared). Reg Sillence in Beltana eventually hoisted his spinnaker sending the moths flying (!) and stormed off into a good lead.

But an ominous black cloud threatened to spoil the party. With spinnakers now swinging wildly, and a flurry of gybes, the fleet wobbled back up the harbour with the wind gusting fitfully. Mogil Maid decided that discretion was the better part of valour and dropped their kite, and Beltana ragged theirs in an attempt to round Basket for the final time.

At the finishing post, Beltana won a deserved victory, followed closely by Scramasax with Chanel Ghost coming third.

Folly Jolly 2008
Written by Andy Pidduck
28th April 2008
The first Folly Jolly of 2008 was blessed with a nice sail over and fair weather for Saturday afternoon and evening allowing the traditional get together before eating ashore.

16 boats attended, amongst them Sea Star, True Blew, Mischief, Gilly VI, Tonnanti, Tania, Astrados, Scramasax, Le Frais, Spruce, Suzette, Triple xXx, Flair, Elzear, Seraph and Gallivant.

40 sat down to eat in the Folly and enjoyed the usual good food and dancing on the tables.

Sunday saw a damp start but this soon passed to give a quiet trip back.

Lewmar Open Race
Written by Andy Pidduck
9th April 2008
Congratulations to Channel Ghost on winning the Lewmar Open for 2008.
A very close finish on handicap gave Channel Ghost the edge over Gallivant by just 1 second!

Our thanks should go to Lewmar for sponsoring the event and the competitors that braved a wet and windy day.

Mark Rushall at PSC
Written by Carolyn Kenworth
7th March 2008
Mark Rushell, RYA Coach of the Year, addressed a ‘full house’ of Members eager to hear his advice on Tactics. Without doubt, the key words of the evening were ‘THE BIG PICTURE’ and although many of us knew the basics, it was great to have clear directions on what was important, with so many things to think about during a race. We were treated to some eye-opening facts and figures to help us consider the impact of line bias, tacking on shifts, wind bends and convergence.

Through modern technology, we were ‘on-board’ an SB3 with Chris Draper and Mark Hiscock, hearing all their tactical thoughts (and Mark Rushell’s comments) on how to sail the race and seeing them come from a poor start to finishing first. Most inspiring. Mark has kindly given the Club a copy of the DVD and no doubt we will be hosting an evening or two to watch it again and learn more.

Our thanks to Mark Rushell for giving us a very entertaining and informative evening and to everyone who helped make the evening such a success.

Details of the charts shown to us by Mark can be viewed on his web site (see the ‘Links’ page), then go to section ‘Downloads and Resources’, followed by ‘the big picture’.

Passage Planning Lecture
Written by Carolyn Kenworth
18th January 2008
PASSAGE PLANNING WITH MIKE DYMOND

For Club Members not able to get to the Club on 17th January 2008, they missed a great talk from Mike Dymond (see links for Mikes web site) on Passage Planning.

Having a passage plan is a legal requirement for travelling at sea (see SOLAS V Regulation 34), although it doesn’t necessarily mean you need one to cross the Solent if that’s where you normally sail and need not be written down!
An example passage plan is available in the downloads section.

Mike advised us to follow this simple list:-
1. Look for the shortest/safest route.
2. Measure the distance and work out the approximate passage time
3. Look at tidal heights (departure and arrival) and any tidal gates.
4. Plot course using tidal stream atlas.
5. Look at dangers en route including shipping, physical (permanent and temporary) etc.
6. Ports of refuge or bolt holes in case of emergency.
7. Double check position fixes.
8. Sunrise/sunset times.
9. Arrange the watch keeping.
10. Know your crew capabilities and fitness.
11. Check your vessel is fully equipped in all senses – food, crew, navigation aids etc.
12. Complete CG 66, notify coastguard and have a shore contact where you lodge your plan. (see links for online filing)
13. Be flexible and ensure your passage plan is flexible.
14. WEATHER – plan ahead and keep it up to date
15. If using electronic aids, check datums are the same (usually WGS 84) and don’t trust them 100%.
16. Don’t put your waypoints on buoys or marks. This can lead to accidents!

Carolyn Kenworth
